FRESH STRAWBERRIES MACERATED IN SUGAR
In the summer when the strawberries are in season they don’t need much.
As a matter of fact, I have stopped buying strawberries unless they are in season.
During the fall and winter, I buy frozen strawberries to add to my smoothies.
2 pints fresh strawberries, sliced
2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
Zest of 1 orange (optional)
A splash of Grand Marnier (optional)
1 Clean strawberries and cut off tops. Slice strawberries and add sugar. Gently toss.
2 If you want to take this a little further, add to the bowl the zest of 1 orange peel using your Microplane (which, if you haven’t bought one yet, do it now). Another fancy addition would be to add just a splash of Grand Marnier.
3 Refrigerate or leave out on counter to macerate and become juicy.
4 You could have fresh whipped cream, crème fraiche, or homemade vanilla ice cream available for guests but if the strawberries are in season you really don’t need anything else. And since it is bathing suit season—who the hell needs the extra calories?!
